FOUNDATION SUBJECTS

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY

Children are encouraged to develop an understanding of past societies from life in ancient cultures through to events in more recent times. They will learn about the physical geography of the U.K. and its relationships with other countries. They will be encouraged to take an interest in their own surroundings and become aware of the influence of human activities on the earth.

Links are made wherever possible to other areas of the curriculum, and children are taught to use a wide variety of sources, such as pictures, books, and atlases, CD ROMs. Whenever possible visits and practical field-study work are used so that the children’s learning is based on first-hand experience.

ART AND DESIGN

In Art and Design the children’s creativity and imagination are stimulated through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. They are taught to use a variety of media and tools to communicate their ideas, feelings and meanings. To help develop their own skills the children are given the opportunity to explore the work of artists and craftspeople from different times and cultures. All of these elements will help them to make a positive impact in shaping environments.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

All children will have opportunities to design and make products and evaluate their ideas using pictures and written work. We will extend their knowledge of materials and components, mechanisms and control systems and structures, as well as highlighting the importance of health and safety.

MUSIC

Music is very important to the life of the school, it brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression. Pupils are encouraged to explore through listening, singing and playing a wide range of musical genres. Performing in groups in front of different audiences develops self-discipline, creativity and togetherness. In assembly, or at special events, pupils are exposed to live music. We have had many gifted musicians visit the school and will continue to do so. Pupils also have access to instrumental tuition and these pupils are encouraged to perform whatever their standard. We have an enthusiastic choir who have been invited to sing at different events in Seaton.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Pupils have at least two lessons of P.E. each week. Activities undertaken are:
Dance.
Games (Including Invasion games, Striking and Fielding games and Net and Wall games).
Gymnastics.
Swimming (Summer term only).
Athletics.
Outdoor and adventurous activities. (Year 6 only – 1 week residential).

We have a good range of facilities for P.E. including:
A large, even field with two large football pitches.
A large tarmac area marked with a netball court. This is also used for tennis.
A reasonably sized hall with wall bars and other gymnastic apparatus.
An outdoor, unheated swimming pool with changing facilities and qualified lifeguards.

During lunchtimes and play times we encourage pupils to be active and they are welcome to bring skipping ropes and soft / foam balls. Many of our pupils play for local sports clubs each weekend. Area football and netball tournaments are organised and hosted by the school for the Axe Valley schools.

CROSS-CURRICULAR TOPICS

Most teachers will usually introduce a new topic or step by talking to the whole class, but will proceed by grouping the children into suitable numbers to provide work which is both challenging and matched to their abilities. In any one day, children may be taught as a class, within a group or as an individual. Children will not be held back if they are able to proceed further and there is always movement between the groups for children’s needs to be met.

R.E. AND COLLECTIVE WORSHIP

The school has both an RE and a Collective Worship Policy approved by the Governors. Our aim for both is to provide the opportunities for all children to have the time to think for themselves, their relationship with others and the attitudes of other people towards each other, both here, at home and in the wider world, and to show concerns for others and an understanding of other people’s beliefs and ways of living. If any parent has any doubts about their child being included in any of these sessions, would they please see the Headteacher and perhaps alternative arrangements could be made. All children received approximately 40 minutes per week on RE following the agreed Devon syllabus. In addition, every child will attend a daily act of worship. This will vary as to where and when it takes place. Sometimes, it is the whole school that meet, or it may be a single class assembly.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

The special Educational Needs policy at Seaton Primary School is one of inclusion, to integrate pupils with SEN into the academic and social life of the school.

We believe that meeting an individual’s special educational needs should be a shared responsibility. Parents, teachers and support services, or external agencies, if relevant, should be involved in the planning and provision for pupils with SEN.

Wherever possible, SEN provision will be closely associated with educational provision for their peers. It is important to enable pupils, from the least to the most able, to have access to the National Curriculum and work to their full potential.

FRENCH CONVERSATION

In Year 5 and 6 the children are given the experience of talking in French. The emphasis is very much on conversational rather than written. They will be taught to speak about themselves and their families, ask directions and be able to buy from a shop. The lessons are full of fun activities, which we hope will lead to a love of a second language.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

All children are encouraged to participate in the extra curricular activities organised by the school. These may vary from year to year, depending on the availability of staff and the talents they have to offer, but usually there is a selection of the following: soccer, netball, swimming, rounders, chess, embroidery, gardening, computing, orchestra, choir, music tuition.

COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE

If a parent is dissatisfied with the curriculum, they should approach the class teacher or Headteacher. If satisfaction is not forthcoming, there is a complaints procedure to follow. Please see the School Administrator for the official document.

The following documents will be available from the school office for any parent to read:

Devon Curriculum Statement
The changes in the Education Act
