THE SCHOOL

Seaton Primary School is the only school in the town and is a Community Primary School, i.e. a school wholly maintained by the County Education Authority and is represented by a Board of Governors. The present building was opened in September 1981. It is a semi-open plan design and comprises six classrooms, an ICT room and practical areas grouped round a central courtyard. There is a large hall, kitchen, two quiet rooms, a library and resource area, as well as an administration block. In 2004, the school gained a new extension, which includes four classrooms, a cloakroom and toilet block. This area is used by our year 3 and 4 classes. In addition, there are several mobile classrooms adjoining the main building, a hard playing surface and excellent playing fields, plus newly created imaginative playgrounds. The school also has its own swimming pool. At the front of the school, we have created a natural environmental area for the children’s use. A pre-school playgroup is also housed within the school grounds.

Seaton Primary School values the learning of all children. It is a school that offers a broad and balanced curriculum, of which the National Curriculum is a part. The school aims for high standards in everything it participates in and takes a pride in its successes. It is a happy school for children, staff, parents and visitors. We endeavour to provide a welcoming atmosphere and feel we are open to all. We meet the needs of approximately 350 children from 5-11 years. We realise the needs of these children differ and our planning is centred around meeting those needs, whether they are for the most able or for those requiring a different support, but the goal of helping each child achieve its potential will be a priority.

We are conscious of the need to take our place in the community and seek varying opportunities to achieve this. We enter and involve ourselves in both local and national competitions. The developments from these links have such a beneficial effect on the children’s self esteem. The staff and governors are all committed to making Seaton Primary School a first class school, and exist to enhance the self-confidence and self worth of every child throughout their years with us.

We endeavour to provide as many different experiences as are available. Some we find on our doorstep here in Seaton, others further afield, which necessitates a journey by coach. These are important aspects of learning and even though cost may inhibit your thinking, we hope you will make every effort for your child to attend.

From time to time, we invite visiting speakers, people who might give demonstrations on various crafts or drama groups to give children an opportunity to experience “live theatre”. You may rest assured that any speaker or visiting group will have County or my approval before being invited.

ADMISSIONS

Children are admitted to school twice a year, in accordance with the following birth dates:

Children having their 5th birthday between 1st September and 28th February will begin in the September.
Children having their 5th birthday between 1st March and 31st August will begin in the January.

Before your child begins school, there will be opportunities for both you and your child to visit the school and discuss matters relevant to enrolment. On one of these occasions, the school would like to see your child’s birth certificate. This is a legal requirement, before your child starts school. A meeting will be arranged to talk to all new parents, and an opportunity given to you to ask any questions, also to meet the Catering Manager and discuss school meals. The school is issued with a planned admission number by the local authority. This is the maximum number of children to be enrolled in a year group in any one year. Special permission must be obtained from the authority to increase this number.

TRANSFER TO SECONDARY EDUCATION

In the September following their 11th birthday, children go either to the Axe Valley Community College, Colyton Grammar School, Sidmouth College or Woodroffe School. This part of Devon still retains the selection procedure at 11+. Colyton Grammar School arranges its own testing procedures and advertises its intentions in the local press. A meeting is arranged each year for all parents of Year 5 children, where both the choice of school and the procedures for the selection tests are discussed.

SCHOOL ORGANISATION

The school is organised into twelve classes. We have a maximum class size of 30 children. The school is divided into four key phases, each phased is managed by experienced teachers who work closely with the Headteacher and other key phase managers to provide the highest standard of education at every step of your child’s primary schooling.

The Foundation phase (Year R) is managed by Mrs Fagan. She is responsible for liaising with the pre-schools and parents to make starting school a positive and rewarding experience for all the children. The parents and children are introduced into school life through a programme of visits, meetings and part-time sessions that enable the children to be confident, happy and ready to learn. (See section on Foundation Stage Curriculum.)

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) - Each individual child is important and is taught in accordance with their ability, the teachers and classroom assistants supporting and extending them, according to their needs. Each class is grouped according to ability for Literacy and Numeracy. These are taught every morning. Other subjects are taught within topics that give every child experience of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Key Stage 2a (Years 3 and 4) - in this phase the children are encouraged to become more independent workers and to organise themselves. Each year group is set for Literacy and Numeracy and children may have a different teacher than their class teacher for these subjects. They continue to have a broad, well planned curriculum that will include a mixture of themed topic work and individual subject work.
The final phase, Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) The children are expected to be leaders for the whole school and are given more responsibility to be good examples. They are prepared for achieving their full potential in readiness for the transition to the secondary school. Again, setting is used to provide support and extension for all pupils according to their needs
