NEWSLETTER

Welcome to a new year at the school.  I hope it has been a good summer holiday for you.  All the children have returned looking happy and ready – everyone has settled down into their new classes quickly and there is quite a buzz of activity in every classroom.  I know already this will be a good year at the school.

We will send out a newsletter every Thursday so if you don’t receive one, check your children’s bags!  There are always spare copies in the foyer – please take one if you need it.  We endeavour to keep you up-to-date through the newsletter with all the events and activities that will be taking place and with news and reports of things that have already happened.  Please read them and keep them pinned up somewhere to remind you.  Please also keep the list of school term dates.

SWIMMING

We will continue swimming lessons this term for as long as the weather permits.  The same arrangements apply as for last term with regards to kit, goggles and verrucae.  The timetable is below.  The Key Stage 1 classes will have a rota for their Monday session; the teacher will inform their class when it is their turn.

Mondays:                     Foundation, Years 1 and 2

                        Tuesdays:                    Year 4

                        Wednesdays:               Year 5

                        Thursdays:                   Year 3

                        Fridays:                        Year 6

HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

Congratulations to Harry and Rosie who will carry out Head Boy and Girl duties this term!

MEAL TIME ASSISTANT

We have a vacancy for a Meal Time Assistant.  This post involves supervising the children in the Dining Hall.  If you are interested in becoming a Meal Time Assistant, please contact the school office for more information.

STAFF RETIREMENTS

As you know, Mrs Hill and Mrs Adams retired at the end of last term.  They have asked us to pass on their thanks to all those parents who contributed towards their retirement gifts.

SCHOOL MEALS

We are sending out today copies of the menu for this term.  If your child wishes to have a school dinner, but does not like the food being offered on a particular day, then the Kitchen will provide a baked potato and filling, provided you let them know by 9.00am on the day.  If your child is a vegetarian, or has any special dietary needs, please let the Kitchen know in writing.  Over the summer we have negotiated with Beer Primary School to supply their school meals from our Kitchen.  This term we are providing meals for two other schools as well as our own.  The news regarding the quality of our meals is spreading.

HEALTHY SNACKS  (Helping your child to learn)

You will see from the news today that scientists have warned about the effects of food additives on children’s behaviour.  All our school meals are produced using fresh locally sourced food.  It is also our policy at school to encourage a healthy lifestyle and therefore we ask that only fruit is provided for a snack at breaktime.  We do not allow sweets, biscuits, cakes, cheese or fruitbars.  The Key Stage 1 children are provided with a free fruit item each day.  Children are also encouraged to drink water.  They can bring a water bottle which can be stored in the classroom for them to sip when they are thirsty.  Good food at lunchtime, five-a-day fruit/vegetables, drinking water and having a good breakfast before coming to school are all proven to help your children to concentrate and to learn.  Help us to help your children achieve their full potential.

QUESTIONNAIRE – SEATON

We have been given a supply of questionnaires by the Seaton Design Statement Working Party on the future of Seaton.  If you wish to complete one, please collect a copy from the school office.

CLUBS

Details of after school clubs will be sent out next week.  All our clubs will begin on the week beginning Monday 17th September to allow the staff to settle into their routines for this term.

LOST COCKATIEL

A common grey cockatiel belonging to Sam and William Ford has escaped.  If you have any information, please contact them.  Thank you.

1st RAINBOWS

We have been asked to inform you that the first meeting will be next Friday 14th September, same time and place as usual.

PTA NEWS from Claire Ross

In order to raise a further £1,500 for playground equipment, the PTA is contacting various local companies and charitable trusts.  No responses yet, so we do need to continue our own efforts.  There will be a “Bag2School” collection on Thursday 27th September. Next week you will receive a bag in which to put secondhand clothing (adults and kids), bed linen, curtains, shoes, belts, hangbags and soft toys.  The items are re-sold in Eastern Europe so they must be re-wearable/re-usable.  NO BRIC-A-BRAC PLEASE.    Please do not return the bags until 3pm on Wednesday 26th September – we don’t have the storage space!  The PTA will be paid 25p per kilo.  In short, ‘springcleaning’ earns money for the school without parents having to dip into their purses!

We will be holding a Secondhand Uniform Sale outside the front of the school next Tuesday, 11th September, from 3.00pm.  If you are not able to come to the sale, but would like to purchase secondhand uniform, then please ask in the office, as it is always available.

Stop Press:   The Grizzly Run is on this Sunday, 9th September.  We need two or three more helpers to man the drinks table at the finish line for an hour long shift between 11.00am and 2.00pm.  If you can help, please ring me on 21669.

Last week we were in London and pleased to be gaining recognition as one of the top primary schools in the country.  This week it is business as usual and back to the usual end of year activities and events.  It is good to have won £5,000 but we believed we were good enough to have gained the top prize (so are slightly disappointed).  I would like to praise the staff and the governors for all their hard work and support in achieving this award, but most of all, I would like to thank the children for their contribution.  They were the stars, with the four representatives who went to London being excellent ambassadors for the school.  Our film, shown to the 450 people who attended the awards ceremony, was very well received and showed the school as a good example to all schools.  Well done to everybody at the school for our success.

STAFF LEAVING AT THE END OF THIS TERM

At the end of this term we have two members of staff who are retiring.  Mrs Hill has been a teacher at the school since April 1984 and has served the school, children and community well for over 23 years.  She is an excellent teacher and we will miss her next year, but we wish her a long and happy retirement.

Mrs Adams has been a Classroom Assistant/HLTA at the school since 1971 and has helped countless children (many of whom are parents of children in the school) with their reading and writing.  She is a lovely lady who has given 36 years of her life to the school and well deserves a long and happy retirement.

If you would like to contribute to a gift for either or both these individuals, please place your contribution in a sealed envelope marked ‘Gift for ……(name[s] of the person[s]) and give into the school office before Friday 20th July.

K’NEX COMPETITION

On Monday, 25th June, some Year 5 children went to the K’nex Model competition.  It was held at Sidmouth College.  The task was to design and build a new fairground ride.  The winners from Seaton Primary School were Sam and Peter.  They have been selected to go forward to the Regional Final.  For attending the event, we were given two more boxes to add to our collection. – by Robyn

SPONSORED SCRAMBLE

We would like to thank all those who have helped us raise a fantastic £1,923.67.  This money has gone into our School Fund which subsidises many activities and trips the children take part in.  Well done to everyone!

TOY AND BOOK SALE

Well done to Year 5 for organising their charity sale.  They raised over £100 which will be donated to the NSPCC.  Thank you to all those who supported this event.

CYCLING TO SCHOOL

May we remind parents and children that all children must wear cycling helmets.  This rule applies even if children cycle to school under the supervision of parents.  Thank you for your co-operation.

We have been asked to let you know about the following activity:

‘DADS, LADS AND DAUGHTERS’ – Family Learning

If you look after children on a Saturday morning go along to a FREE music and making things workshop at St Claire’s Adult and Community Learning Centre, Seaton, on Saturday 30th June, 10.30am – 12.30pm.  There will be refreshments provided and parking available.  All ages and abilities are welcome.  For more details, phone Lizzie on 07974974722 or Maria on 01297 626141.

NEWSLETTER

When you receive this newsletter I will be in London awaiting the Ashden Award presentations.  Earlier in the day I will have been having tea with Prince Charles at Clarence House and later tonight I will be meeting the former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore.  Not my usual day at work!

Whether we win this evening, or are the runners up, it will have been an amazing achievement for the school.  In my acceptance speech I will thank the staff and governors for their hard work and support.  However, my biggest thanks will go to our excellent children for their enthusiasm and knowledge of sustainable issues, which impressed the judge so much, and was the biggest reason for us making it to the top two.

Keep your eyes and ears open to the news (tonight and tomorrow).  I will attempt to let the school office know what happens.

CANOE TRIPS

Year 5 have had the opportunity to go canoeing and went in three groups over the last two weeks.  Here is a report from Oliver:

On Monday, 18th June, we went canoeing at Axmouth Harbour.  We had to wear lots of protective clothing in case we fell out.  We did something called ‘Seal Launching’ which is where you get in the canoe at the top of a bank and slide down into the river.  We capsized and it was really deep so we had to swim to the surface.  We also did lots of races and challenges in the sea and on the shore.  I found it really enjoyable and would certainly do it again.

Annabelle writes:

On 12th June a group from Mrs Hill’s class went canoeing.  We were first taught how to use a single paddle, then we went to our canoes. They were Canadian canoes.  We all had to join our canoes together to make a raft and had to cross them.  It was hard.  After lunch we did Seal Launching and if you were at the front of the boat you got a facefull of water!  I really enjoyed this experience because I learnt a lot about teamwork and it was ultra fun!

and Bethany:

We were shown how to use the paddle and told about the different types of canoe.  We had to paddle up the estuary.  We played Tug of War and did Seal Launching and had races and games.  It was a great team work challenge and I really enjoyed it.

KWIK CRICKET FINALS

Yesterday, Wednesday 20th June 2007, Seaton B went to the Kwik Cricket final to play against either Aminster A or Stockland A, who had to play in a semi-final.  Stockland A won that match and so lined up to play Seaton B in the final.

Seaton B’s team were Amy, Daniel, Abbie, Remy, Todd, Jonathan, Elliot and George.  Unfortunately, after a great game of cricket, we were beaten, but still got a Runners Up Cup and Runners Up medals.  Thank you to the parents and Mr Priestley who took us to Cloakham Lawns. -  by Daniel and Amy

YEAR 6 INDUCTION DAY

Our Year 6 children will be making their first visits to their secondary schools next Wednesday, 27th June.

YEAR 5 TOY AND BOOK CHARITY SALE

Thank you to all those who have sent in toys and books for our sale next Wednesday.  Please give your child some money to spend at the sale and a carrier bag for them to take their goods home in.  All items will be priced at 5p, 10p or 20p and the money will go to  Year 5’s chosen charity - the NSPCC.  They have chosen the NSPCC as they feel the money will help children less fortunate than themselves and also help children who suffer from abuse and neglect.

ATHLETICS FESTIVAL

On Thursday, 14th June, 33 children from Year 6 went to the Axe Valley Community College for an Athletics Festival.  Twelve schools took part in the tournament, each having a go at 12 events, ranging from an obstacle marathon to wellie throwing.  Despite the bad weather, our spirits were high and became even higher when we found out we had won!!  -  by Amy, Megan and Abbie.

SPONSORED SLIM

Miss Richmond is doing a sponsored slim until Christmas -  to raise funds for the restoration of Poltimore House.  If you would like to sponsor Miss Richmond, the sponsor form will be on the desk outside her room.

LIFE SKILLS

On Tuesday, 19th June, Year 6 went to Pecorama to practise life skills.  There were seven scenes.  Our favourite ones were hygiene and car robberies.  We were shown how to be aware of some dangers in our everyday lives, such as:

What would you do if you smelt gas?

What flags would you see on a beach if it was dangerous to swim?

How do you wash your hands properly?

We were told the answers to these questions and many more.  It was also great fun!

PTA NEWS from Claire Ross

Thank you to those who have already sent in raffle prizes . . . but (as ever) more would be welcome.  Hopefully we will have a display showing our ‘final’ choice of playground equipment at the fete so that everyone can see what we are raising funds for!  To make this fete a real success, we do need more volunteers to help with the stalls and/or setting up from 12.30pm.  Please contact me if you can help.

NEWSLETTER

My diary for the rest of this term is completely chock-a-block with all the activities and events that are taking place.  Please take note of the dates of some of these events below.

Rehearsals for the school production of ‘The Lemonade Kid’ are already on the go and everybody is busy.  We are all looking forward to the Ashden Awards presentation next Thursday – you may have seen some articles in the local press already.

KWIK CRICKET COMPETITION – Wednesday 13th June

Yesterday, two teams – Seaton A and Seaton B, competing against other primary schools in the area, represented the school in the annual Kwik Cricket competition held at Cloakham Lawns at Axminster.  The eight children in Seaton A and eight in Seaton B batted, fielded and bowled their way through five games each, with Seaton B winning their league and Seaton A being beaten by Stockland and not making it through to the finals.  Unfortunately, at 2.30pm rain stopped play and Seaton B will have to play the final next Wednesday against either Stockland or Axminster.  Well done to both teams, and good luck to Seaton B next week.

Mr Dike

TESCO VOUCHERS

Please send in any remaining Tesco vouchers you may have at home by the end of next week, Friday 22nd June.  Thanks very much to all those people who have already sent in their vouchers – we are hoping to beat the number we received last year – 40,000.  Many thanks for your support; we will let you know what we are able to ‘buy’ with them once we have the final total.

TELEPHONE NUMBERS

From time to time children need to telephone their parents, either for forgotten books, PE kit, etc or due to a change of circumstances at school.  Although many of our children do know their home phone numbers, we would very much appreciate all children either learning their contact number, or having it written down in their contact book.  It is very time consuming when several children come into the office at one time wanting to phone home and they do not know their number, or whether their parents are contactable at home, work, or elsewhere.    Thank you for your help in this matter.

NEWSLETTER

Having been caught out by the sun at our Sponsored Scramble event (with apologies to our Year 6 children), I need to remind all parents at the beginning of this summer half term to be aware of the sun and help us to protect your children.  Putting suncream on each morning and wearing a hat are the most important factors.  We have planned for our Sports Days to be held in the mornings (although the Area Sports will be an afternoon).  If you have a pergola or gazebo we could borrow to provide extra shade at any special event, please let me know.

ASHDEN AWARD

Yesterday I attended, with Governor Mr Kelf, the final interview by the Ashden Award committee in London.  You will see from their website, www.ashdenawards.org, that we have been nominated for a prize.  I do not know whether this will be first or second (£15,000 or £5,000) until the awards ceremony on 21st June. Four children and two accompanying parents have been chosen to attend the ceremony, with Mr Kelf and me, in the Royal Geographical Society building in London.

I am sure, whatever the prize we are awarded, that the school will receive a great deal of local and national press attention because of this award and we will have many visitors calling to see what we do.    In the meantime, we wait with anticipation the final result.

COMMUNITY FORUM

You are all invited to come and hear more about the Ashden Award at our termly Community Forum meeting tomorrow afternoon at 2.00pm (Friday 8th June) in the Community Room.  Refreshments will be available.  There will be the opportunity to meet the governors and ask them questions about the school.  Please come and have your say.

YEAR 5 TOY AND BOOK SALE – Wednesday 27th June 2007

It is nearly time for this very popular event, which Year 5 organise, in order to raise money for a charity which they have been researching in their R.E. lessons.  To make the sale a success we need as many toys and books as possible to sell.  If you have any that you could give to us, please could they be brought to Mrs Hill’s / Mrs Hopkinson’s classrooms.  Thank you very much.

NETBALL TOURNAMENT

Well done to all children in Years 5 and 6 who played in a one-off 7-a-side Netball Tournament just before half term at Colyton Grammar School.  They played against St Mary’s, All Saints and Colyton, and won all three matches: 2-1, 5-2 and 3-2.  We came away with a shield.  Certificates will be awarded shortly.  Well done to you all.

This year Seaton Carnival Committee are re-instating a Children’s Fancy Dress Competition.  It will be held on Wednesday, 29th August, at 3.00pm in the gardens outside the Town Hall (inside if wet).  All children up to the age of 15 are invited to take part in the fun.  For an application form, please contact Mrs Shirley Ashman.

NEWS FROM KIDZ@PLAY

Swimming:  I recently sent out new registration forms.  Please could these be completed and returned as soon as possible.  During after school sessions at kidz@play we are going to be using the swimming pool, but in order for your child to take part, permission needs to be given on the new registration form – without this we cannot allow your child to swim.

Skipping Workshop:  On Wednesday, 4th July, we have some people coming to kidz@play to take a skipping workshop.  It is a fun, relaxed, session which will help children to develop skills using a single rope, skipping in pairs/groups and long rope games, including double dutch.  There is a maximum of 30 spaces and the cost of the session will be £6.00 (the usual after school club session price).  This price will include drinks and snacks for the children.  The workshop is open to parents and older siblings. Please contact Faye Webb, 07875953144, to book your place.

Dressing Up Clothes:  We are currently trying to expand our pretend play opportunities for the children.  This is a plea to anybody who may have some dressing up clothes they no longer require.  We would also appreciate a small clothes rack.  Many thanks.

With the forecast for tomorrow being uncertain and the weather today being fantastic, we decided to hold the sponsored scramble today.  The children had great fun working their way around the obstacle course and achieving their target.  The children have got the half term holiday now to collect their money.  Well done to all.

WALKING TO SCHOOL

This week is Walk to School Week and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to enjoy walking each day during the better weather. There is a colouring competition called ‘Pollution or Solution’ which shows the benefits for all of not using your car.  Please collect the competition sheet from the school office for your child to colour in over the holiday.  Competition entries have to be sent to Devon County Council (address on entry form) by 8th June 2007.

Just to say that I am still looking at setting up a walking bus scheme. Further news to follow after the half term holiday.

SWIMMING

The swimming timetable is now finalised and the sessions are detailed below.  Year 6 will also swim EVERY Wednesday afternoon with Rachelle.  On Wednesday, 6th June, Year 2 children will swim with Rachelle as well as their Tuesday time.  All classes will have additional sessions on Wednesdays – date to be advised by class teachers.  Please be reassured that the pool is checked daily to ensure it is up to temperature.  Children must bring their kit for their timetabled session.  It will be the class teacher’s decision as to whether they swim.

The sessions run by Christina Oyo will carry on throughout the half term holiday, ie Saturday 26th May and Saturday 2nd June.  However, the Years 5 and 6 children will now join with the Year 3 and 4 children at 10.45am

FANTASTIC FOSSIL

If you are looking for something to do over the half term holiday, then visit Seaton Library and take a look at the fabulous fossil Ichthyosaur which was found just along the coast at Charmouth in 2004.  It will only be there for a short time because it is on loan from the Natural History Museum in London and it will be swimming off down the Jurassic Coast to Sidmouth Library after half term, so go and see it while you can.

There is also the chance to win your own fantastic fossil by entering the competition to draw a picture showing how you think the Ichthyosaur might have looked when it was alive and to think of a nickname for it.  Or, you might like to enter the story-writing competition and have your story published in the local ‘View from Seaton and Beer’ newspaper.

PTA News from Claire Ross

PTA ‘Camping Night’:  Early notice!  The PTA is planning a ‘camping night’ on Friday 13th July.  The idea is that parents and children will camp out in the school playing field for the night.  Various fun and games, plus BBQ, will be organised and, hopefully, the swimming pool will be open.  So, put the date in your diary and watch out for details nearer the time!

A very full letter this week – please read carefully and keep pinned up at home to remind you of dates.

KEY STAGE 1 REORGANISATION

I am aware that there are a few concerns about our plans for the reorganisation of Key Stage 1 in September and I am looking forward to seeing people at the meeting next Thursday afternoon to reassure you that what we are planning to do will work.  Over the past six years I have worked very hard to achieve high standards and a school where every individual child achieves his/her full potential.  I do not intend to let this drop; on the contrary, I am looking to move the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 forward and achieving the basic skills primary quality mark in the next year.  Mrs Fagan is producing a Frequently Asked Questions sheet with answers to questions we have already received and this will be sent home on Monday.

SPONSORED SCRAMBLE

Our annual Sponsored Scramble will take place next week on Friday afternoon – weather permitting.  The scramble raises money for our school fund.  The school fund is used to subsidise all the activities and events that go on at the school throughout the year.  Without the fund, we would have to keep asking for money.  School trips, theatre groups, expert visitors, food activities, swimming, art equipment, playground equipment, plants and seeds for our school environment, and many little extras would cost more or would not be able to happen.  Please, please help us to support all these enrichment activities by sponsoring your child and raising money for our school fund.

SWIMMING

Our lovely pool is now ready for use and we have several qualified lifeguards available to ensure we are safe during swimming lessons.  Every Wednesday we have a qualified ASA swimming teacher coming into school to support staff with the teaching of swimming.  Each class will access this on a rota basis, as well as having a timetabled session on another day, so you may find that your child swims twice a week.

I ask that you read the Hygiene Regulations relating to swimming reproduced on the back of this Newsletter.  These are Devon County Council rules that we are legally required to adhere to.

Swimming Kit:  Girls must wear a one piece swimming costume and boys swimming trunks (not ‘board’ shorts).  All children must have a towel and a hat.  Swimming hats are available from the school office at a cost of £1.00, or £1.50 for a fabric one.  Please ensure all kit is clearly named.

Armbands:  Children who require armbands should bring them named and inflated.  We do supply other floats and woggles for use during the lesson.  Please ensure children bring their kit for every timetabled session regardless of the weather.  Children will not be allowed to ring home if they have forgotten their kit.  Each class will be informed of their swimming time early next week.

NEWSLETTER

What beautiful weather we are having and superb conditions for our film making yesterday.  The school is being nominated for a National Award for sustainability and the film is to enable the final decisions to be made by the panel of judges in London.

I was very proud of all the children as they played their parts yesterday in contributing to the filming and showing what a good school we are.  If we win the Award, it will be because of them.

CLASS PHOTOGRAPHS

The school photographer will be coming to school tomorrow to take class photographs.  These will be available for you to buy in the near future.

FAMILY GROUP PHOTOGTAPHS

All the families who requested a family photograph when the photographer comes into school on Saturday 12th May have now been contacted with an appointment time.  There are a few sessions available during the morning, so if you would like to have a photograph taken, please call into the office.  It is the same photographer who takes the individual and class photographs and the charges are similar.  Please note that the original date was Saturday 19th May, but it is now Saturday 12th May.

AXE VALLEY MINI TRAVEL

The bus leaving the town at 8.45am for the school, and the bus leaving school at 3.25pm, will cease running at the end of May.  Axe Valley Mini Travel apologise but are unable to keep the service running as it is only used by one or two children each day.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS

Details of the clubs have been sent out this week.  Over the last two terms, we have been running a variety of activities for the children to attend.  However, we have found that children sign up for a club, go to one or two sessions and then drop out without explanation.  This is very frustrating for the member of staff running the club and the other children who have committed themselves to attending every week.  This term we ask that children think carefully about the club they would like to go to and attend the first session.  If after this they do not wish to continue, they must talk to the member of staff and excuse themselves from the club.  We hope this solves our problem and encourages children to make a real commitment to their activity.  Thank you.
